Hiew Chok Sien's Blog: Bukit Tinggi

We just came back from a 3-day-2-night trip to Bukit Tinggi. It was mostly a relaxing trip, knowing beforehand there isn't that much to do there. Shee Yun and Chen Rui enjoyed the rabbit zoo the most. We went there twice, spending about 2 hours each visit. I hadn't expected to be able to spend that long feeding rabbits. After finishing the rabbit food we bought, the children picked leaves to feed the rabbits, and sometimes the rabbits ate the leaves.

Shee Yun made a new friend there, an older girl, around Primary 4, who looked Indian or Malay but is probably Chinese because she speaks fluent Mandarin. Whenever Shee Yun makes friends with strangers easily, it always reminds me of how shy and how much a loner she used to be when she was younger.

Other than feeding rabbits, the other activity they enjoyed was feeding fish. We visited the botanical garden to try to look for a four-leave clover, with no success. We visited the Japanese garden (with fish feeding), and also the French town.

This is how they feed the rabbits.
At the botanical garden, we hunted high and low for a four-leaf clover, but too bad no luck.

The accommodation at Bukit Tinggi was so-so, as I had expected. Something similar to Fraser's Hill. Serviceable and sufficient if you're not picky. One thing we were not pleased about was they didn't have extra beds, and also didn't allow (paid) upgrading to a larger apartment. We wanted to do these after finding that there was only one queen sized bed in the apartment. When Michelle called Reception, they just replied "Keh3-not4" (cannot) to both enquiries. After that we kept joking about "Keh-not", answering every other sentence of one another with "Keh-not". I want to go to the toilet. "Keh-not". I want to eat lunch. "Keh-not". Even Shee Yun commented about me "爸爸很废".

Yesterday when we were playing the swings with the children, two young Malay girls eagerly waited for their turns. At one point Chen Rui got off her swing and hesitated whether she wanted to continue playing. One little girl came up and wanted to get onto the swing. Chen Rui timidly allowed her to do it, although she seemed to still want to play. Although Chen Rui is usually the fierce kid at home, when outside she is more timid. Shee Yun saw what happened, and immediately said to the little girl "Saya adik bermain". She meant to say her younger sister was still playing, but her Malay came out probably as a direct translation from Mandarin, "我的妹妹要玩". Still, I am impressed she tries to speak Malay whenever she meets Malays. She likes to make use of new things she learns. We recently started both children on BM tuition.

Shee Yun likes playing with swings.
This was the first time Chen Rui wanted to play with a swing. Maybe she had tried a swing before, but if she had it must have been a very very long time ago. She was quite timid and only rocked herself gently, using her feet to push.

At Bukit Tinggi when I bathed Chen Rui, she saw a rather large spider in the bathroom and immediately screamed and started crying. She is afraid of spiders and other insects, and usually whines and pleads for help when she sees any nearby. This time the spider was quite large and her reaction was much stronger. I had seen it earlier, and was hoping she would not spot it until I finished bathing her, drying her and bringing her out of the bathroom. The spider moving about at a steady pace (as opposed to being stationary) probably made Chen Rui even more frightened.
